PORTFOLIO

The Structural Colour Paintings were born from observations of the Hanasaari coal power plant seen from the artist’s studio window. The series examines how the rainbow phenomenon found in soap bubbles, coal seams, and oil slicks captures a Lovecraftian anxiety over the turbulent changes happening in our world.

Lowe is interested in structural colour’s ability to create metamorphic paintings, which change in response to their surroundings. The paintings burst into colour as the viewer walks past, almost akin to living entities. They change in response to stimuli from lights, shadows, and reflections. Mirror-like surfaces entangle the observer, making them a participant in the kaleidoscopic event taking place on canvas — reflecting how our fates are ultimately intertwined with changes happening in the environment.
